The Weird Truth Behind Oud Oils (and why they're so expensive)

Posted by Zaina & Co. on

Ever wondered why Oud oils are so expensive? Interested in understanding the process behind the extraction? Allow me to briefly explain Oud or Oudh.

Oud oil comes from the forests of Southeast Asian agar tree. When this wood becomes infected with a particular type of mold, the tree reacts by producing a dark, scented resin, which is popularly called liquid gold.  The most important part when extracting this essential oil is to ensure that the fungus inoculated in the tree is at least 8-12 years old.

The extraction process is carried out through steam distillation. At the first stage, the Agarwood is immersed in water for a few months. Afterward, the soaked wood is placed in huge boilers where the water evaporates along with the resin and collected in condenser. The resin-soaked wood or Agarwood and the oil distilled from it are known as Oud!

The reason why Oud is so expensive is because of its rarity. Less than 2% of wild agar trees produce it. Some experts claim that the best Oud comes from the oldest trees, which are even scarcer. Agarwood oil is used by many for health reasons such as spasms in the digestive and respiratory systems, fevers, abdominal pain, asthma, nausea as well as other ailments. Besides its healing effects, oud oil is widely used for aromatherapy. It has the ability to invoke a deep sense of relaxation. Our products range from liquid and bar soap, to deodorants, creams and body wash. They are all infused with unique Oud oils; they are halal and contain no animal products.
